When I substituted regularly in the local elementary school I noticed that the some of the kids who had the hardest time staying on task were being pulled out if the classroom for specialized reading instruction.
Sometimes it would be because they were counting down the clock to when they would get a chance to get out of the class. And a few times I expect it was because they knew they’d never finish it so they didn’t seem to want to dig in.
My mother was a reading/English teacher. I remember going with her to her school when I was ten. It was on a local Air Force Base. The details are foggy but I remember being proud when I saw how the students listened to her and were engaged.
I didn’t have that as a substitute.
But I knew the potential. And I wanted a tool to make that happen…
…more to come.
